OEM Wheels

The word OEM stands for 'Original Equipment Manufacturer' so whenever you see this word written on any product, it is to show you that the product has been manufactured by the original manufacturer. For instance, BMW OEM Wheels means that the wheels are manufactured originally by BMW. OEM many sometime also be called as OE which means 'Original Equipments.'

There are two ways that BMW wheels are made and they are - forged or cast. Company manufactured wheels are generally cast made except for a few models which might be forged.

Company manufactured wheels are generally cast made except for a few models which might be forged. There are a lot of variants of cast like the gravity or the pressurized cast. These types of wheels are cheaper than the forged one but do not lack any amount of quality. They are more affordable so people generally prefer to go with these types of wheels. The wheels are light in nature and this gives an added advantage to the vehicle and its performance.

But there are a lot of advantages of the cast wheels. These types of wheels are stronger; hence it can be used on any roads and can sustain any pressure.

Cost Effective: These types of wheels are cheaper than the forged one but do not lack any amount of quality. They are more affordable so people generally prefer to go with these types of wheels.

Light: The wheels are light in nature and this gives an added advantage to the vehicle and its performance.

Stronger: These types of wheels are stronger; hence it can be used on any roads and can sustain any pressure.

Forged wheels are more expensive and they need more effort to be produced. These types of wheels are for exotic look and a luxuriant feel. Forged wheels are really strong and they are extremely light weight. This makes it the most advantageous for your car. Forged wheels are one of the best ways to make a wheel in terms of gravity, internal features and the extreme light weight technology. Moreover these wheels need to be specially ordered which gives the customer a chance to select any width, size, offset, lug pattern, center bore or even the final finish.

Single piece Forging is the manufacturing standard of BMW wheels comprised of a single piece of metal which makes it more strong and lightweight. This type of wheel is manufactured as a result of forging, extrusion and a metal blank which provides the expected contours and arrangement. The rim of this wheel declines the requirement of weld components, hence improvising integrity while dropping manufacturing costs.

Wheel Dimensions - Width, Offset and Backspace

Width - What most people don't realize is that the published width of a wheel is not the actual width.

For example: A 6" wheel is 6" wide where the tire mounts, but is actually 7" wide edge to edge.

Offset - Wheels are normally designated by "offset" shown in millimeters as ET on the wheel. As it implies, offset is how much the mounting surface is offset from the center line of the width toward the face of the wheel.

Backspace - It is usually more instructive the look at wheels in terms of "backspace" rather that offset (shown as the "T" dimension on the drawing to the right.) Backspace will tell you how far the wheel will fit under the fender. When fitting larger wheels and tires it is important to know the maximum backspace a chassis will accept.
